MDF/IDF Considerations
- Network/IT rooms or IDFs entered: Not confirmed. Exact MDF and IDF placement should be validated with the floor plan and onsite pathways.
- Confirm that the main network-room location supports practical cable pathways, rack space, patch panels, UPS/power, cooling/environment needs, and service access.
- Copper-distance limitations should be checked during design; long runs may require an IDF, pathway change, or fiber uplink strategy.
- The Internet/ISP demarcation location should be identified early so handoff cabling, firewall placement, and network-room layout can be planned.
Fiber/Uplink Considerations

Planning Questions And Guidance
Wireless design
AP quantity is not calculated from square footage alone. A design should consider the floor plan, wall construction, ceiling height, user/device density, interference, application needs, and RF conditions.
MDF and IDFs
Network-room placement should be validated against pathways, copper-distance limits, rack space, patch panels, UPS/power, cooling, service access, and the ISP demarcation.
Low-voltage systems
Security cameras, access-control doors, AV, phones, and specialty devices may need different cabling paths, mounting details, power, and switch planning.
Existing cabling
Reuse decisions should be based on cable category, labeling, pathway condition, test results, location, capacity, and whether the old layout matches the new floor plan.
